High drama outside EC office in Chennai after poll panel rejects actor Vishal’s nomination

PROBE NEWS: High drama was witnessed outside the office of the Election Commission in the Tamil Nadu capital on Tuesday after the poll panel rejected the nomination filed by actor Vishal to contest the Radha Krishna Nagar by-polls. Actor Vishal staged a dharna against the rejection of his nomination and claimed that his supporters were threatened. He was then taken into preventive custody by the police. He is expected to meet the returning officer again. Vishal, who is the President of Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council, had filed his nomination to contest the by-polls as an independent candidate after the seat fell vacant following late AIADMK Chief J Jayalalithaa’s demise last year. Earlier, actor Vishal said that he was contesting the polls as he wanted to do good for the people and that he was inspired by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to take the step.The Election Commission also rejected the nomination of Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa after several discrepancies were found in her form.The by-polls for the Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency will be held on December 21 and December 24.Senior AIADMK leader E Madhusudanan will be the ruling AIADMK’s candidate who will go up against rebel AIADMK leader and Sasikala’s nephew TTV Dhinakaran. The RK Nagar by-elections were scheduled for April 12 earlier this year but were postponed following the cash-for-votes scam unearthed by the Income Tax Department.
